The radio is ok, but not exceptional.

I bought this sony to replace my failing DUAL XHD6425 radio. The Dual radio had built in HD, an exceptionally well design Bluetooth that transmitted clearly even with the windows down, and many more extras. Too bad it had a short circuit the factory could not fix. It would not accept inputs from the memory buttons.

I bought the MEX-BT3800U expecting exceptional value from the sony brand. My main impetus was the bluetooth feature and the capability to upgrade later to HD radio. What a let down. The bluetooth has a mediocre noise reduction capability. If you drive a noisy car like my 2002 neon your voice will sound very faint to the listener. I was forced to spend an extra $40 for the sony microphone. A cheap looking microphone that looks like a $5 knock off at the mall and performs like one too. The microphone attaches to the visor and stands high off its perch about inch. I expected a more stream lined design for $40! I find myself wishing for my old Dual radio. True had to dial the stations but the bluetooth was great with HD radio included for the same price as the sony.

    Summary

The bluetooth in the sony will only work well if you buy the microphone, and its still just ok.

HD is an extra feature you have to buy, for extrea $120+. Built in, in the DUAL radio for a lower price.

The Sony is an overpriced radio short on features. Not offering anything better other cheaper radios already offer for a lesser price.

I bought this radio because of a number of different things that it stated. It states on the box that it is i-Phone compatible and that it is HD Ready. It also states that it is satellite ready. The bluetooth feature was one of the main reasons I bought it along with the HD radio feature. But beware. When Sony says that it is HD radio ready it doesn’t mean that it has an HD tuner. It means that you can plug a Sony HD tuner into it that costs about an extra $120. And from the majority of reviews I’ve read on the Sony HD tuner, most people describe that it only gets HD signals within about 15-25 miles and the signal can be kind of sketchy at that and those were from towns like Phoenix and St. Louis. Also, when I pulled it out of the box you can really find where the mic on the unit is. I have yet to try the bluetooth feature but after looking at the radio, I believe people when they say you need the external mic for bluetooth calls which is another $30-$40. Being able to connect devices via the USB or Aux is nice. But it appears like Sony is trying to make extra money by having you buy a bunch of extras for a bunch more money to get this radio to do what you think it should be able to do out of the box with no extras. The Sony name was part of the reason I bought this. But their name took a big hit with me after their slight deception. The radio is not a good buy for the money. As one person said Dual makes a stereo for even less that actually has an HD tuner in it (no Sony only add on that you have to buy extra).

This radio would be great if it actually had the HD tuner inside it and it had a better mic in it for bluetooth calling. That would probably raise the price a little, but it would be worth it and I would think a lot better of Sony for it. And it would avoid the ungainly sight of an external HD tuner and external mic.

The main thing I’d caution against is watch out for “READY”. If the stereo manufacturer states that it is “ready” that means that it doesn’t have that, but you can buy an add on for a bunch more money so that it can do that. This radio is HD Radio “Ready”, meaning it doesn’t have an HD radio tuner but you can add one on if you spend another one hundred dollars or so for an external tuner that looks like it has to be their brand.

Don’t need wires!. I sync my iphone whit A2DP bluethoot music streaming, and it sounds great. Also I control my ipod classic with the unit. Yo should activate the LOUD feature to enjoy a powerfull sound.

    Things I Like:

    - Pairs with any cell phone or iphone via bluethoot

    - The USB port charges the ipod

    - Search by Artist, playlist, gendre

    - The music volume turns down slowly whit incomming calls.

    - Relation price vrs quality

    Dislike

    - The beep sound after ACC is off (Turn it off).

Bought this Sony MEX BT3800U for $155.00 on amazon. Good price for the unit. Love the hands free calling convenience and front plug ins. The flaws I noticed was the back ground noise when listening to audio via bluetooth. The bright WHITE half ring of light around the volume knob that is not dimmeable. The hard to read screen in daylight if screen is in dimmed mode. Otherwise all other features are top notch. You will end up buying a subwoofer to round out the low end. I have Polk DB651 front and DB961 rear. Bass was noticeble lacking. I ended up installing Infinity Basslink powered subwoofer. My ride is now complete.
